If there’s one piece of advice I could give to anyone starting their business, it would be this:
So often when I work with clients, they hesitate to pick a niche market because they feel like it will limit them in who will hire them. I am here to dispel that myth, friend!
Just because this is the person you are marketing towards, does NOT mean that this is the only person who will utilize your services or interact with your business. I promise. Wanna know how I can keep my promise? Let me share a little bit about Ocean…
Ocean is the persona that Lululemon created as a “muse” to spark the design process. She is described as a “32-year-old professional single woman named Ocean who makes $100,000 a year. She is engaged, has her own condo, is traveling, fashionable, and has an hour and a half to work out a day.”
Now I don’t know about you, but when I think of all the people in my life that wear Lululemon, maybe 1% of them fit into that category of a 32-year-old profession that makes $100,000 a year. But does that stop them from buying Lululemon? Absolutely not. And why is that? Lululemon’s founder, Chip Wilson, said it best… “If you’re 20 years old or you’re graduating from university, you can’t wait to be that woman. If you’re 42 years old with a couple of children, you wish you had that time back.” Friends, the same principle applies to you.
Creating an Ideal Customer Avatar, or an ICA, is so crucial to the branding process because you can get really, really specific and create this persona… your ideal client… and use them for all your marketing purposes. Trying to figure out how to word something or what colors to choose for your business? Think of your ICA and what they would respond to.
So now it’s time for you to create your ICA. Follow this template below to start crafting your person…
{Insert name} is a {insert age} {insert profession} who….
